Summer in Johnson County just feels different when you know where to go. Whether you’ve lived here forever or you’re new to the area, there are so many great ways to cool off and enjoy the season close to home. From big aquatic centers and lakeside beaches to free splash pads the kids will love, JoCo has something for everyone.

🏊 Pools Worth Spending the Day At

Tomahawk Ridge Aquatic Center (Overland Park)

As Overland Park’s largest outdoor pool, Tomahawk Ridge has plenty of room to spread out and relax. There are shaded areas, grassy spots for lounging, and enough space to easily spend the whole afternoon there. The pool is open daily from noon to 7:30 p.m., and admission is $8.

Young’s Pool (Overland Park)

If your kids love a little excitement, Young’s Pool is known for its 31-foot drop slide that’s especially popular with older kids and teens looking for something more thrilling than a lazy river.

Black Bob Bay (Olathe)

Black Bob Bay feels like a mini water park without having to leave Johnson County. It has raft slides, a lazy river, diving boards, shallow play areas for younger kids, and a huge 50-meter pool. Admission is $10 for residents and $12 for non-residents, with daily hours from 12:30 to 7 p.m.

Sar-Ko-Par Aquatic Center (Lenexa)

After a recent $15 million renovation, Sar-Ko-Par Aquatic Center has become one of the nicest pool facilities in the area. You’ll find zero-depth entry, slides, competition pools, a lazy river, and even an AquaClimb wall. Admission is $9 for Lenexa residents and $12 for non-residents.

Thomas A. Soetaert Aquatic Center (Shawnee)

This spot really has a little bit of everything. There are slides, diving boards, a lazy river, water features for kids, and a baby pool with its own playground area.

Splash Cove at Jim Allen Aquatic Center (Shawnee)

Designed specifically for younger kids, Splash Cove is ideal for children 9 and under. The water stays shallow, and there’s a large slide, play structure, and mini wave pool that keeps little ones entertained for hours.

Matt Ross Community Center (Overland Park)

Need an indoor option for a rainy day or winter swimming? Matt Ross has lap lanes, a leisure pool, lazy river, and water slide, making it a great year-round choice.

The Beach at Lake Olathe (Olathe)

If you’re looking for more of a lake-day vibe, Lake Olathe Park is hard to beat. The beach area includes locker rooms, showers, and a floating obstacle course called The Aqua Park. You can also rent kayaks, paddleboards, pedal boats, and canoes. Plus, coolers with food and non-alcoholic drinks are allowed, which makes it easy to stay all day.

Leawood Aquatic Center (Leawood)

This community favorite is open daily from 11:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. and offers a great balance of fun and affordability. Admission is $7 for residents and $10 for non-residents.

💦 Splash Pads That Make Summer Easier

One of the best things about Johnson County summers is how many free splash pads are available. Most are open from late May through September.

Wilder Bluff Park (Shawnee)

Opened in 2021, this splash pad was designed to feel more natural, with boulders, waterfalls, and a shallow river-style channel where kids can float small boats downstream. It’s one of the most relaxing setups for parents too. Open daily from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Roe Park (Overland Park)

Roe Park may be smaller, but it sits inside a beautiful 40-acre park with playgrounds and nature play areas nearby. The splash pad is sensor-activated and open daily from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Thompson Park (Downtown Overland Park)

This smaller shaded splash pad is perfect if you’re already downtown for the Farmers Market or grabbing coffee nearby. It’s easy, quick, and great for younger kids.

Lake Olathe Spray Ground (Olathe)

This area has three connected play sections with streams, sand and water features, and even musical elements along the pathways. Open daily from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Erfurt Park (Shawnee)

A longtime family favorite, Erfurt Park combines a splash pad with shaded picnic areas and a nearby nature-inspired playground.

☀️ Other Summer Spots Worth Checking Out

Deanna Rose Children’s Farmstead (Overland Park)

This is one of those classic Johnson County experiences every family ends up loving. Between the petting zoo, fishing ponds, pony rides, playgrounds, and farm animals, it’s easy to spend an entire day here.

Shawnee Mission Park Beach (Shawnee)

If you want something that feels more like a weekend getaway, Shawnee Mission Park Beach offers swimming, trails, volleyball, boat rentals, and open green space just minutes from the city.

Black Hoof Park Kayak Rental (Lenexa)

You don’t have to drive hours for a relaxing kayak evening. Black Hoof Park makes it easy to get out on the water close to home.

KC Watersports (Lenexa Area)

For families or teens looking for something more adventurous, KC Watersports offers wakeboarding lessons, camps, and a beach area where spectators can relax while watching the action.

Overland Park Farmers Market (Downtown Overland Park)

Not technically a summer water spot, but still one of the best weekend hangouts in Johnson County. Saturday mornings downtown are full of fresh produce, local vendors, coffee, and a great community atmosphere.

The Bottom Line

Summer in Johnson County offers so many ways to relax, cool off, and make memories without needing to travel far. Whether your perfect summer day involves water slides, a peaceful beach afternoon, or a free splash pad to entertain the kids, there’s no shortage of options nearby.
