Apple Festivals & Orchard Weekends in September: Your Kansas City Fall Bucket List
There’s something about September in Kansas City that feels like the beginning of the good part.
The mornings get a little cooler. You start thinking about opening the windows again. Football is back. The first hints of fall start showing up everywhere—and suddenly spending a Saturday wandering through an apple orchard with a cider donut in your hand sounds like exactly what you should be doing.
So consider this your sign:
Plan an orchard weekend.
September is one of the best times to explore apple orchards, farm markets and fall festivals around the Kansas City metro, whether you're planning a family day, a date, a girls' outing or simply looking for an excuse to get outside and enjoy the beginning of fall.
And yes, the cider donuts are absolutely part of the plan.
Your September Apple Orchard Bucket List
There are no complicated rules here. Pick an orchard, grab your people and see how many you can check off before apple season disappears.
- Pick your own apples
- Get the cider donuts
- Drink something involving apple cider
- Take the obligatory orchard photo
- Go on a hayride
- Wander through the farm market
- Let the kids pick way too many apples
- Buy something completely unnecessary from the farm store
- Take at least one photo where everyone pretends they weren't just arguing in the car
- Go home and immediately Google "what to make with 14 pounds of apples"
Bonus points if you come home with local honey, apple butter, jam, pumpkins or some random fall decoration you definitely weren't planning to buy.
Make a Whole Weekend of It
You don't have to rush through an orchard visit just to check it off the fall list.
September orchard weekends are better when you slow them down.
Start with coffee somewhere local before heading out. Spend the morning picking apples. Get the donuts while they're warm. Wander through the farm store. Let the kids run around. Take the pictures.
Then find a local lunch spot, stop at another farm market on the way home or head back with your haul and make dinner.
And if everyone is tired, slightly sticky and carrying more apples than any reasonable household needs?
Successful orchard day.
Don't Skip the Apple Festivals
Apple festivals are another perfect excuse to spend a September weekend outside.
Depending on the festival, you might find local vendors, live music, food trucks, apple desserts, cider, kids' activities, crafts, farm demonstrations and plenty of opportunities to convince yourself you need one more fall-themed thing for the house.
They're especially fun if you love the orchard atmosphere but want a little more happening than traditional apple picking.
Before heading out, check each festival or orchard's current schedule. Apple availability, picking conditions, activities and hours can change throughout the season.
What to Bring for an Orchard Day
You don't need much, but a few things make the day considerably better.
Wear comfortable shoes you don't mind getting dusty. Bring sunscreen even when the September air feels cool. Toss some water in the car. Bring a light layer for chilly mornings.
And leave some room in the trunk.
You may think you're going for one bag of apples.
You are probably not coming home with one bag of apples.
What to Do With All Those Apples
Eventually you'll get home, put the apples on the counter and realize you have made a slight miscalculation.
This is part of the experience.
Turn them into apple crisp. Make homemade applesauce. Bake muffins or bread. Add sliced apples to oatmeal or yogurt. Pair them with sharp cheddar for an easy snack. Make apple butter.
Or just eat them straight from the fridge until your household slowly works its way through the haul.
No judgment if cider donuts somehow made it home too.
The Best Part of an Orchard Weekend
Of course the apples are good.
The donuts might be even better.
But the reason orchard weekends belong on the September calendar has very little to do with either one.
It's getting outside when the weather finally starts changing.
It's wandering around without anywhere else you need to be.
It's watching the kids carry a basket that's clearly too heavy because they absolutely refuse to leave any apples behind.
It's taking pictures you'll laugh about later.
It's supporting local farms and small businesses.
And it's giving yourself permission to enjoy the season while you're actually in it instead of realizing sometime in November that fall disappeared again.
September doesn't need to be complicated.
Pick a weekend.
Pick an orchard.
Grab your favorite people.
Get the cider donuts.
Take too many pictures.
Buy too many apples.
September weekends in Kansas City are undefeated.
