WEEKENDS IN KC | Scenic Fall Drives & Day Trips

There’s something about fall in Kansas City that makes staying home on a Saturday feel like a missed opportunity.

Cooler air, changing leaves, windows down, coffee in the cupholder and just enough of a drive to make it feel like you actually went somewhere.

If you’re ready for a fall day trip, here are a few scenic drives worth putting on your weekend list.

Weston, Missouri

About 45 minutes north of KC, Weston is an easy choice for a fall Saturday. Take the backroads when you can and make Weston Bend State Park one of your stops for views over the Missouri River and surrounding bluffs. Then head into historic downtown Weston to wander the shops and grab lunch or a drink before heading home.

Parkville + Platte County

If you want the fall drive without committing your entire day, head toward Parkville. Explore downtown, walk along the river and then spend some time driving the wooded roads through Platte County. This is a good option when you want a spontaneous Saturday afternoon rather than a planned day trip.

Lawrence + Clinton Lake

Head west for a completely different kind of KC day trip. Take your time getting to Lawrence, spend a few hours exploring Mass Street, grab lunch or coffee and then make your way toward Clinton Lake. You get a little bit of everything with this one: fall scenery, a great downtown and plenty of places to stop along the way.

Louisburg + Paola

For a quieter fall drive, head south. The countryside around Louisburg and Paola gives you rolling farmland, tree lined roads and plenty of reasons to slow down. Add an orchard, pumpkin patch or local restaurant and you have an easy fall day without going far from KC.

The Flint Hills

If you have a full day, go farther west.

The Flint Hills aren't the traditional dense, colorful fall forest you might picture, but that's exactly what makes this drive so good. In the fall, the prairie turns shades of gold and bronze and the landscape seems to stretch forever. Pick a route through towns like Council Grove, Cottonwood Falls or Strong City and make the drive itself part of the destination.

Loess Bluffs + Northwest Missouri

For something a little more off the beaten path, head north toward Loess Bluffs National Wildlife Refuge. Fall brings changing landscapes and migrating wildlife, making this one especially good later in the season. It's a longer drive from KC, but perfect when the goal is to get away from the city for the day.

Make a day of it.

Don't overplan it. Pick a direction, find a local coffee shop, take the road you've never taken before and stop when something looks interesting.

Sometimes the best weekend plans aren't really plans at all.

Save this one for the first perfect fall Saturday.
